Senior Product Owner – SwifT & Investment Planning & Strategy (12 – month contract)

The opportunity

The Senior Product Owner is the voice of the business partners, responsible for defining the overall strategy and direction of the Investment Planning & Strategy product. The successful candidate will play an integral role in two teams focused on enhancing and maintaining Asset Liability Modeling and Strategy What-If tools. 

Who you'll work with

The Senior Product Owner identifies and prioritizes features to meet the needs of the Customer, ensuring organizational alignment with partners and communicating their needs in the form of user stories and the product backlog. The Senior Product Owner works closely with development team members (Developers, BA and QA) and the Scrum Master to provide clarity, refinement, and suitable detail for each user story.

What you'll do

People & Team Responsibilities:

  • Acts as a driver of “what” needs to be delivered for the business by providing direction and guidance on behalf of business partners.

  • As part of the agile squad, acts as the decision-maker around priority and delivering value

  • Bring product thinking and an incremental delivery approach to the Agile squad’s work

  • Collaborate with Agile Coaches, Scrum Masters & other Product Owners to advocate, foster agile thinking, culture, and behaviours in the organization

Delivery Responsibilities:

  • Makes customer engagement a central aspect of the work, effectively develops relationships, forums, and approaches that enable efficient and candid feedback on delivered work as well as upcoming priorities

  • Effectively prioritize at many levels with competing customer and partner needs

  • Represents value from a customer’s perspective within the team through a clear vision, prioritization at high and detailed levels, and clarifying the work for team members

  • Prioritize work through a well-organized roadmap, release strategy, and backlog of features & user stories, and clearly communicate what needs to be done

  • Support the business case development in collaboration with relevant partners ensuring their product is funded and set up for success

  • Manage inputs required from partners and customers to be able to fully represent the voice of the customer

  • Take ownership of the outcome from the perspective of the customer both in realizing the expected impact/outcome and in how users are adopting the solution

  • Develop strategies and plans to enhance the partnership with business partners in evaluating the benefits, costs and risks associated with solutions and services

  • Facilitate product demos to empower Squad members with real-time feedback from customers

  • Define and clearly communicate acceptance criteria for output based on business needs

  • Applies product management techniques such as personas, story mapping, validated learning, product health models, OKRs, etc. at a sophisticated level. Including leading the selection and implementation of the concepts based on the situation/context

  • Supports the organization’s adoption of more mature product management techniques

  • Support, advise, and mentor Product Owners

  • Takes ownership of the clarity and efficiency of communication with leaders, customers, and partners

  • Strategize on relevant outcome objectives and targets with leaders and customers based on the squad’s mandate, using them to frame decisions and track progression toward them

  • Document and maintain all work related to prioritization as well as the ‘What’ side of the work. In addition to the higher level strategic aspects it will also include effective organization of releases, features, user stories, tasks and defects in JIRA

  • Regularly engage with the Squad to offer feedback on work-in-progress, clarify requirements, and answer questions

What you'll need

  • 5+ years’ experience as a Product Owner or equivalent role

  • 5+ years’ experience encouraging agile principles and values and applying these principles to working with or in Agile teams

  • 8+ years of delivery experience

  • Relevant university degree or equivalent post-secondary education is preferred

  • Understanding of capital markets total fund management concepts such as asset mix, asset classes, market risk, etc.

  • Experience in pension plan asset-liability modeling is an asset

  • Demonstrated experience with building or evolving products in a complex, matrixed organization

  • Demonstrated experience with taking ownership for product strategy and roadmap, setting product vision, objectives, success measures, adoption approach etc.

  • Experience delivering incremental business benefit with a large-scale highly complex technical product

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and influence teams to achieve results without a direct reporting relationship

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with executive level leadership

  • Ability to understand, empathize and bridge multiple perspectives to navigate competing priorities, manage expectations, and arrive at collaborative solutions
