Senior Data Engineering Specialist

– this is the role you’ve been waiting for The Data & Analytics team at Loblaw is hiring a Senior Data Engineering Specialist with experience in building cloud-based modern data platforms from the ground up.

Reporting to the Senior Manager
– Data Engineering, the incumbent will be responsible for ingesting, wrangling, cleansing and delivering data to power our Analytics, BI and ML/AI capabilities.

The successful candidate will be passionate about data and have a strong foundation of data management concepts and engineering best practices.

What You’ll Do:
· Build and maintain batch and real-time data pipelines.

· Build and maintain an API gateway to manage integration points between the data platform and other applications and data consumers.

· Build end-to-end processes supporting data ingestion, data transformations, data wrangling, data cleansing and data delivery.

· Explore opportunities for optimization of existing data pipelines and re-designing of data infrastructure for greater scalability and performance.

· Build and maintain a repository of metadata and lineage information about how data flows through its lifecycle.

· Assist with data-related technical challenges and perform root-cause analysis to answer specific business questions and recommend and implementing ways to improve data reliability, efficiency and quality.

· Contributes to the development and documentation of data management standards framework.

· Mentor and cross-train junior data engineers.

What You’ll Bring:
· University degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering or related field.

· 5 years of software engineering experience with strong focus on data.

· 5 years of relevant OO programming experience using Java and Python.

· Experience working with Cloud data platforms technologies: Google Cloud Platform (Dataflow, Big Query, Apache Beam, Apache Airflow) and Azure Databricks.

· Experience using Jenkins to configure and build CI/CD pipelines.

· Experience building Terraform scripts to provision infrastructure as code.

· 5 years of experience with relational databases (Teradata, Oracle, SQL Server) and big data technologies (Hadoop, Hive)
· Advanced knowledge of SQL queries
· Superb analytical and conceptual thinking skills; to not only manipulate but also derive meaningful interpretations from data
· Ability to take initiative, multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment
· Capability to liaise with all levels across the enterprise on projects and ad-hoc requests
· Strong detail orientation is essential in this role
