Manager, Due Diligence

Manager, Due Diligence

The opportunity

The Manager, Due Diligence will primarily be responsible for assisting in operational due diligence reviews and monitoring activities in respect of external managers in accordance with the Board’s External Manager Due Diligence Policy. The position requires travel within Canada, to the U.S.A., and, to a lesser degree, Europe and Asia.

Who you'll work with

You will collaborate with our Investments division, investment managers, and industry participants to discuss business and operational matters related to our external manager investments.

What you'll do

Conduct due diligence on external manager investments across both liquid and illiquid asset classes.

  • assessing the manager’s control environment (operations, compliance, technology)

  • understanding the funds cash flow, settlement, custody and valuation processes

  • perform due diligence on key service providers (fund administrators, auditors, etc) of an investment

  • meeting business and operational personnel to assess their skill and integrity

2. Monitor Activities in respect of external managers and key service providers:

  • build ongoing relationships with managers to facilitate periodic due diligence monitoring

  • detailing changes in the funds staffing, controls, systems, and other material issues, and highlights key issues to relevant internal stakeholders (Investments, Risk, Finance, etc.) :

  • review and summarize the annual audited financial documents of investments

3.   Build and maintain a good understanding of the key aspects and functions within an Investment business: 

  • financial products / instruments

  • investment strategies

  • trade processing, settlement, custody, and valuation

  • operational, investment and financial reporting

  • performance and risk measurement

  • regulatory/compliance environment

4. Build relationships and liaise with key contacts within the Investment Division, external managers, service providers and other contacts

  • respond to inquiries and requests from the Investment department

  • work with various internal departments to ensure the efficient and effective use of resources

  • assist the Investment, Investment Finance and Law departments with the preparation, review and execution of contracts, as the need arises

  • monitor the service levels of external partners and service providers, as required, and take measures to ensure excellent service is received

  • identify both opportunities/requirements and develop solutions/courses of action where there may be no precedent internally and little externally. Due to the non-recurring and analytical nature of activities, constructive thinking will be vital. As the financial services industry continues to evolve, this position needs to keep in constant contact with the industry and its direction.

What you'll need

  • relevant university degree (Business Administration, Finance, Economics, Accounting, etc.)

  • CFA, CA and/or other investment related designation (ex: CAIA) is a valuable asset

  • the ability and the confidence to interact with senior management at external manager partners, quickly establish credibility and persuasively manage the due diligence discussions to meet with policy and Board objectives

  • strong communication skills; both written and oral

  • relevant professional work experience (5+ years) across fields such as:

    • governance – fund administration, audit, compliance

    • investment operations – trade processing, settlement, pricing, etc.

    • middle office functions – risk, performance

    • technology – data management, infrastructure, business continuity, etc.

  • a natural curiosity to think independently with an ability to ask intelligent, probing questions.

  • ability and confidence to debate professional opinions within a team setting

  • advanced excel skills and familiarity with other Microsoft suite of products (PowerBI, Dynamics, etc.)

  • ability to work with large datasets and extract insights leading to enhanced decision making

  • effective planning and interpersonal experience to set departmental and corporate priorities and co-ordinate projects to meet deadlines
