Investment Associate, Infrastructure & Natural Resources

This is a Contract position in Toronto, ON posted November 17, 2022.

The opportunity

As an Associate, you will have a key role in analyzing potential Infrastructure & Natural Resources “INR” equity investment opportunities, executing transactions and working with existing portfolio companies to craft strategy and implement value-enhancing initiatives.

Who you'll work with

You will be joining our Toronto office, where you will work in a dynamic team-based environment, directly supporting senior team members across all sectors and geographic regions. This is a chance to define and differentiate yourself as an investor and build strategic relationships within the global market.

INR consists of a team of over 60 highly-specialized private equity investment professionals, with offices in Toronto, London, Singapore, and an additional presence in Santiago, Chile. Currently, INR leads a geographically diverse portfolio of approximately C$36 billion with assets in North America, South America, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Australia and New Zealand, and a target to grow to over by another $16 billion over the next 5 years.

Our Infrastructure team focuses on high quality assets that provide critical services to society with defensive investment characteristics and low return volatility. This includes investing in sectors such as renewable energy, electric and water utilities, airports, ports, and toll roads. The Natural Resources team targets exposure to commodities in the oil and gas, mining, agriculture, timberland, aquaculture, and other resource-based sectors to provide cash flow, inflation protection and diversification.

What you'll do

  • Lead all aspects of the construction and implementation of financial modeling tools to analyze investment opportunities, in conjunction with our Analysts;

  • Assist in the due diligence process and incorporate the findings into a financial model;

  • Deliver high quality analysis which identifies key value drivers and financial risks through sensitivity and scenario analysis;

  • Coordinate and work closely with external advisors, consultants and partners and submit bids adhering to timelines;

  • Prepare presentations, reports, and investment recommendations to senior management and, where applicable, the Board of OTPP;

  • Review and analyze financial reports, budgets, board books and other information prepared by management of our portfolio companies;

  • Work with portfolio company management to maintain financial models that are used to analyze strategic issues and value the company;

  • Support internal strategic projects, and;

  • Support the preparation of internal annual valuations.

What you'll need

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience, preferably in investment banking, principal investing or corporate development within an operating business

  • Bachelor’s degree required, with the pursuit of a CFA designation considered a plus

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to influence others and comfort presenting to senior audiences

  • Excellent analytical and quantitative skills and ability to perform in-depth analysis

  • Ability to balance multiple priorities while remaining detail oriented

  • A proactive attitude and drive toward action and results

  • Advanced skills in Excel and PowerPoint

  • Desire and willingness to travel internationally

  • Fluency in Portuguese or Spanish would be an asset

  • Interest in helping INR and OTPP meet its net zero targets by working with its portfolio companies to reduce their emissions; experience in carbon tracking, net zero target achievement, and design or executing emission intensity reduction projects is an asset
