About the role 

The Mobile Software Engineering Director will be responsible for talent strategy and planning, recruiting, developing, coaching and mentoring staff to develop a high performing, highly motivated and engaged team of professionals.  This role will support the Canadian mobile apps and will apply mobile engineering best practices and tool adoption for Sun Life. 

The Mobile Software Engineering Director will report to the Assistant Vice-President, Mobile Platform and Software Engineering.

The Mobile Software Engineering Director will have a team that includes Engineers, Business Systems Analysts and Scrum Masters who are passionate about mobile technology and are key experts in this field.

Within this role you will be recruiting, coaching and mentoring of staff to develop a high performing, highly motivated and engaged team of professionals in Mobile Engineering. 

As a key member of the Mobile leadership team, you will have the opportunity to influence and collaborate in the definition of key mobile delivery processes and be a critical force in the successful delivery of business solutions.  

As a leader in the Mobile team, the Mobile Software Engineering Director will lead a team highly skilled and collaborative individuals across multiple locations, including People Leaders, Mobile Software Engineers/Developers, Scrum Masters and Business Systems Analysts.

The Director Mobile Software Engineering will lead programs such as new hire on-boarding, talent development, retention and succession planning.  As part of the Mobile Leadership team, the ideal candidate will play a significant role in ensuring a positive work culture while growing and retaining talent in the Mobile organization.  Critical to the success of this role, the Director Mobile Software Engineering will be measured by talent attraction, employee retention, team member engagement and successful project delivery.  

What you will do: 

  • Develop, maintain and communicate the Mobile talent plan with the Delivery leaders based on demand forecasting and best-fit staffing assignments.   
  • Effectively hire and retain talent while leading and growing the Mobile Software Engineering team.
  • Coach and mentor staff to develop a highly motivated and engaged team of Mobile professionals.
  • Accountable to establish and evolve the Mobile Software Engineering practices to ensure compliance with audit, business continuity, security and risk guidelines and policies.
  • Contribute and/or adopt global Software Engineering re-usable best practice processes.
  • Promote and enforce the use of DevOps technical practices and tools.
  • Engage and effectively work with third party vendors and outsourcers (talent supply management both onshore and offshore) to manage temporary staffing services.
  • Champion an agile mindset, being transparent and adaptive to create a high-performing team culture.
  • Promote a learning environment to develop team member skills that align with industry developments and organization goals.
  • Contribute to the performance plans and objectives that recognizes talent and provides honest, direct employee feedback in a timely manner.

What you need to succeed: 

  • Bachelor or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or a relevant field.
  • Able to navigate organizational change and strategize a direction forward for the Mobile Software Engineering organization.
  • Experienced in talent management – recruitment and selection, employee retention, succession planning, performance management, performance development and coaching, reward and recognition.
  • A passion for people leadership and management.
  • An effective communicator at all levels within the organization, in both structured and non-hierarchical, informal structures.
  • Have a mindset of a test and learn attitude, a bias for action and a passion to innovate.
  • Strong leadership skills – comfortable managing large cross functional technical teams, staff and project issues in multiple locations.
  • A self-starter, that is able to contribute while influencing the software engineering direction. 
  • Conflict and issue resolution and escalation experience.
  • Belief in a culture of interaction, transparency and trust in teams.  Able to build a non-hierarchical culture of collaboration, transparency, safety and trust.
  • Good analytical skills with the ability to assess alternatives, risks and benefits while focusing on the attention to detail.
  • Multi-tasker, has positive energy and attitude to work in a fast paced team environment.
  • Strong collaborator with cross-functional teams from technology, design, business and operations.
  • Self motivated and service oriented.
  • Good organizational and time management skills.

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted.  It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors.  In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance.  Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
